When developing a website, it is important to pay attention to content.  While the product or service being marketed through the site may be truly life changing, it will not sell if internet users never see it.  Content is the element of a website that draws visitors from the search engine to the site, and content is what keeps visitors on the site long enough to realize they need that life-changing product or service.

Why is web content important?

Internet users use search engines whenever they are looking for something.  Most users are looking for information, not products.  If a website is full of advertisements, or has only marketing material for a specific product or service, visitors go back to the search results.  They typically do not stay on a page that does not have the information they are seeking.  As a result, websites that are lacking in quality content are far less likely to produce a sale than a website full of information.

First, quality web content is targeted to the audience. The content should focus on the needs and interests of the internet users who will buy the product or service featured on the website.   A website selling equipment for above-ground pools, for example, should have content of interest to people who own and care for above-ground pools.  For example, an article on keeping the grout between ceramic tiles clean would not be as appealing as an article about caring for a pool liner.

Second, quality web content is unique.  Many search engines now return search results with duplicates omitted.  In other words, if ten websites have the same, identical article on caring for a pool liner, only one of those websites will show up in the search results.  The other nine will be left out because they are duplicates.  Having original, unique content helps to ensure that a website will be listed in search engine results.

Finally, quality web content is well written.  The content should provide information that is useful to visitors, whether it is informative or simply humorous.  The writing should be easy to read, with proper punctuation, spelling and grammar.  Do not rely entirely on spellcheck programs because they are designed only to look at spelling, not at whether the writer has used “their” instead of “there.” The same holds true for grammar checkers, which look at content using specific rules and guides. 

Web content is a vital part of a website’s success.  Without quality content, a site is not able to draw visitors, so it cannot effectively promote any product or service.  Because content is so crucial, designing a website should always focus on its inclusion.
