How to write product descriptions
Many people make a living selling products and services on the internet. Are you interested joining the ranks of internet sales people but you can not seem to sell anything? In order sell your products, you must have a great product description. Simply putting a picture on a website with a link to “buy now” will not sell your products. Communicate to your customer with great words and you will sell more products than you can keep in stock.
Writing a product description takes more skill than you may think. The art in writing product descriptions is in choosing descriptive words that paint a picture for your customers. Even if you are not a professional writer, you can write product descriptions that will sell by following the key rules of product descriptions.
Before you sit down to write your product description you need to know your product and your customer. Start using the products that you sell and get to know them well. Do not rely on the manufacturer’s description or sales material for the products you sell. Understand every feature and learn how your product is better than similar products. The best product descriptions are written by people who are passionate about the products they sell. While doing your product research spend some time researching your customers also. You need to know not only who will use your product, but who will purchase the product for them. When writing your product descriptions your style of writing and word choice needs to be adjusted based upon your customer research.
Write your first draft product description listing all the features and benefits you have discovered. You may find it is easier to start writing your product descriptions by creating a list of the features and benefits of your product and then building your sentences. Continue to draft your product description by incorporating descriptive language to bring your product to life. You may need to write two or three drafts of your product description.
The goal of your product description is to tell your customer why purchasing your product will make their life easier. In order to do that you need to draw upon your research and you experience with the product, tell people what the product will do for them. Focus your writing on using clear and decisive language without adding more words than necessary. Use common language that both your customer and the purchaser of your products will understand. Always use complete sentences and proper words, this is not the time to use codes or urban slang after all you want your customers to see you as a profession and not a kid standing on the street corner.
The final step in product description writing is to include a call-to-action for your customer. Ask for the sale. You can be creative in your wording but you want to give people a method to purchase your product immediately. After customers read your product description they will respond to your passion and knowledge, you need to capitalize on this moment and immediately sell your product.
It may sound difficult to write a quality product description but if you follow the steps and write with passion, you can create a powerful product description that will keep your inventory constantly moving.
